Super Mario Gift Box: Question Mark Block

With Ian's 7th Birthday coming up we decided on Super Mario for the theme. The first thing I decided to do is the gift boxes for the guests.

I really liked the idea of the Question Mark Boxes that I saw online, only I did not want the to be flimsy and wanted them to be a bit bigger.

You will need:
  • Box (your choice in size)
  • Yellow Paper
  • Brick Paper
  • White question Mark (picture below)
  • Spray Adhesive
  • Tacky Glue
  • Exacto Knife
  • Clear Fishing Line
  • Small Paint Brush
  • Paper Plate or Scrap Paper

I purchased the 6" x 6" Tall Box from the "paper craft area" at Hobby Lobby. They are a bit heavier and don't cost much. (They come in lots of different sizes, if you want to go smaller or bigger)

I also bought yellow scrapbook paper and "brick" scrap book paper and Hobby Lobby.

First I took the Lid off of the box, flipped it over and spray glue on the bottom and then placed the brick paper on the box, the 6" x 6" box is the perfect size and you can get 4 sides with one sheet of the scrapbook paper. I then took the Exacto knife and cut down each side as close to the edge as I could get.

Follow same step on all sides of the box, I did the bottom and two opposite sides with brick paper, and the other two sides and top of lid with yellow.

On the lid sides I did the same with yellow on two opposite sides and brick on the other two, allowing them to match the side of the box.

Once all spray glued down, I went back over all the edges that weren't all the way down with the paint brush and the tacky glue.

Next I printed off the questions marks, each block needs 3 in all, these were printed on plain white printer paper.

Cut out the question marks including the bottom dot, spray glue them and place on the yellow top, and two sides. On the sides it is best to do this with the lid on so that you can make sure the question mark is below the lid so it can be seen with the lid on.

Let all glue dry at this point.

I then Poked a whole in the center of the bottom of the box and another in the center of the lid, then I cut off a long section of the fishing line. I tied knots in the bottom until it would not go through the whole. I then ran the other end up through the bottom of the box and up through the lid, placing the lid on the box.

Lift the lid from the box as high as you would like it to be able to go, at this point tie knots in the fishing line so that the box wont come off of the line. Above the knots tie off a loop so that it can be hung from some where.

Your done, you have a very cool looking Mario Question Mark Gift Box that can be hung as a decoration for the party and taken home by the guests. In all it cost about $5 per box of the size I did in supplies, though you may have some of it already in your craft bucket like I did.
